New Moon and Astronomical Calculations

Q: A deviant body, dubbing itself FIQH COUNCIL OF NORTH AMERICA, has resolved to 'abrogate' the fourteen century Rooyah (Physical Sighting) principle of the Shariah. Since the time of Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam)—from the very inception of Islam—to the present day, the sacred principle on the basis of which the Islamic dates are determined was and shall perpetually be Rooyah (physical sighting) of the crescent moon. The miscreant so-called 'fiqh council of North America' is now attempting to abrogate the Shariah by claiming that the inviolable principle of the Shariah is outdated and that it applied to only illiterate people living in the desert, mountains, villages and the like. But for the ignoramus liberals who are bereft of Deeni insight and extremely deficient in Islamic knowledge, the deviant fiqh council, claim that the new principle of this belated 21st century is 'astronomical calculations'.
Astronomical calculations have no validity in regard to the determination of the Islamic dates. The Fuqaha (Jurists of Islam) have abundantly and adequately ruled on the impermissibility of this method in so far as it concerns Ramadhaan, the Eids and the Islamic months in general. The errant fiqh council of North America has strayed from the Straight Path of the Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jama'ah in its conspiracy to abrogate the sacred principles of the Shariah. This Deen was perfected fourteen centuries ago. It is not in need of the mutations which the aberrant fiqh council seeks to hook onto the Shariah.
Muslim communities in America should reject the new plot of the fiqh council and continue to determine the Islamic dates in the method shown and commanded to the Ummah by Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) more than fourteen hundred years ago. The determination of the Islamic months by the act of Rooyah is an ibaadat which cannot be compromised. The liberals of the fiqh council are attempting to scuttle this sacred principle with their bid'ah of astronomical calculations which the Muslim communities in America should incumbently reject.
Muslims have to incumbently reject the determination method of the misguided modernists and adhere to the fourteen century old commands of the Shariah. The Shariah may not be trifled with. These modernists and misguided liberals despoil the ibaadat of Muslims with the products of their nafsaani opinions. The only valid method by which the commencement of the Islamic month is confirmed is by physical sighting of the crescent moon or by the confirmed sighting of another place—a sighting which is conveyed reliably in terms of the Shariah, Muslim communities should not allow themselves to be stampeded into baatil (falsehood) by bodies sporting high sounding designations.
The Astronomical New Moon is on Friday September 22, 2006 at 11:45 Universal Time (i.e., 7:45 EDT, and 4:45 PDT ). Looking at the visibilty curve one can understand that the moon is impossible to be seen in any continent, although it is possible to be seen near the International Dateline southwest of Hawaii by telescope on September 22. On the same day at west coast of North America, the moon will be about 14 hours old, and about 1 degree above the horizon at sunset time, and will not be visible in North America. On September 23, 2006, the moon will start to become visible, by telescope from New Zealand and Australia, and by naked eye from Southern Africa, South & Central America. If atmospheric conditions are perfect, it can be seen in North America also on Sep. 23, otherwise it will be seen in North America on Sep 24.

A: Actually, following the astronomical calculations ( i.e. the lunar calendar) is quite simple as I’ll explain below.
You see, the problem with fasting on the basis of someone seeing the moon in Jordan or Japan is similar to saying “if the sun is visible in Japan, why do we not say our fajr prayers in Jordan?”
We are separated by great distances. If somebody sees the moon in Jordan, then the Jordanians can start fasting, if somebody sees the moon in Japan, then the Japanese can start fasting, not the entire world.
Now, coming to Astronomical calculations, with the advances in science, astronomers are now able to calculate exactly when and where the moon will be visible or not for the next 20 years or more. So, if we have been blessed with knowledge by Almighty Allah, why not use it to bind the Ummah together instead of different masjids following different dates. For example, in Connecticut, Bloomfield starts fasting a day earlier than Hartford. Does it make any sense at all??? In Pakistan, the Ruet-e-Hilal committee sits in session till late in the evening for moon witnessing, even though we know that the new moon can only be visible till a few minutes after sun down. How do you think it all sounds?
And lastly, doesn’t the Quran again and again exhort us to think, contemplate and use our brains? Why must we insist on otherwise?
or else:
It is not the Sunnah to use electricity, running water, microwave, iron, washing machine, toaster, mobile phones, loudspeakers and the electronic media. A deviant body, terming itself as modern muslims of the 21st century, use and incite others to make use of all such ‘creations’ of technology. These miscreants are attempting to abrogate the ‘Sunnah’ by making use of such things. Even traveling to the mosque in a car is against the Sunnah. Only camels may be used for the purpose. All those who do not own or have access to a camel, must import the same from the Arab countries, or else walk to the mosque, no matter how far it is. Do not become an ‘ignoramus liberal’!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Choose the answer which makes more sense. May Allah guide us all.
