Who is Responsible for a Person's Lack of Faith?

WA asked: If Allah SWT decides to grant someone with Faith, then that Someone is the Blessed one. If not, then who is responsible and who suffers for it ?

Answer: Well, the Quran informs us that Allah withholds faith from those who are unwilling to have faith. It says that such people are doing zulm against their own selves, and that Allah is never unjust and never wrongs anyone. Of course, believers in the Quran take such statements on faith, even though we don't really understand exactly what it means.
I tried to look up if their was some biological basis to Free Will / Free Won't, and this is how I begin to understand it: http://signsandscience.blogspot.com/2014/08/divine-will-and-human-free-will.html

Actions & their Weight

In an email message, JKC quoted some technical articles on Cryonics, and concluded: So if a neuron shrinks or grows in volume during freezing that shouldn't be something it hasn't seen before, and even if a shard of ice does punch a meaningless hole in the net it should be obvious to a intelligent nano-machine that the hole was  just caused by ice and not by synaptic behavior because the ice would still be sticking through it.

I wrote: JC, I can see that you are concerned about the outcome of Cryonics program you've signed up your brain for. Someone or something set in motion a process which brought you into existence in this life - trust the same to repeat the process and bring you back into existence.
I urge you to worry more about the quality of that life!
We believe that the quality of that life depends on the beliefs and actions in this life. Do take the time to study the Quran or Torah or start with any scripture you feel more comfortable with.
This link may be a good place to start: http://searchtruth.com/list.php

JKC asked: Actions I can understand but why beliefs? Why on earth would an omniscient being consider holding an unshakable belief even in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence to be a virtue and not a vice? Give me a good answer to that question and I promise I will start reading the Quran, although I'll have to learn Arabic first.
...

Answer: Actions carry weight only if they are based upon the correct beliefs.

As I understand it, in this world we have been sent to be tested if we can be entrusted with the inheritance of the Gardens of Eternity. This is because The Human volunteered for The Trust.

The Quran uses the Arabic term for inheritance for the Gardens promised to the righteous Believers who do Good Deeds. Inheritance implies that we will not be guests but rather owners of those gardens. I think this means we shall have a much larger role and be entrusted with the land we inherit!

The inheritance will vary in accordance with the faith and actions of each individual, as indicated in the size of the gardens mentioned in Quran 57:21 and Quran 3:133, and as stated in Quran 8:4. For those who believe and seek forgiveness for their sins, God will grace them with a garden as extensive as heaven [singular] and the earth, while those who also keep their duty to God, the pious, the reward will be greater: as extensive as the heavens [plural] and the earth. The believers will have exalted grades/grades of dignity, forgiveness and honourable sustenance.
[Note: The term arabic term translated as heaven implies sky and not paradise; the Quran uses the terms Garden and Fire for the perpetual abode of the Hereafter. Personally, I imagine them with the concept of planets and stars]

The last few verses of Quran Chapter 18 inform us:
Quran 18:103-108 Say: "Shall we tell you of those who lose most in respect of their deeds?- "Those whose efforts have been wasted in this life, while they thought that they were acquiring good by their works?" They are those who deny the Signs of their Lord and the fact of their having to meet Him (in the Hereafter): vain will be their works, nor shall We, on the Day of Judgment, give them any weight. That is their reward, Hell, because they rejected Faith, and took My Signs and My Messengers by way of jest. As to those who believe and work righteous deeds, they have, for their entertainment, the Gardens of Paradise, Wherein they shall dwell (for aye): no change will they wish for from them.

See if some of my blogposts are of any help:

JKC responded:
> Actions carry weight only if they are based upon the correct beliefs.
I don't think so. If you hit me in the head with a heavy ax that action carries weight regardless of what beliefs were or were not dancing around in your head when you did it. If somebody does the wrong thing for the right reason it's still the wrong thing, and the right thing for the wrong reason is still the right thing.

> As I understand it, in this world we have been sent to be tested
But why do religious people insist God devised it as is it as a stupidity test rather than a IQ test?

> as stated in Quran 8:4. For those who believe and seek forgiveness for their sins, God will grace them with a garden as extensive as heaven
So says the Quran, and you believe it's true for the same reason anybody believes what the Quran (or the Bible) says is true, because their Mommy and Daddy told them it's true. It's no deeper than that. That's why there aren't many Baptists in Pakistan but lots of them in Mississippi. If you tell me where somebody was born I can have a pretty good idea what their religious beliefs are. Your deepest held beliefs are a function of Geography.
So it's easy to understand why a human could gain power by pushing the idea that believing in stuff he can't prove is a good idea, but you still haven't answered the question I asked in my last post. Why on earth would an omniscient being consider holding an unshakable belief in the face of overwhelming contrary evidence to be a virtue and not a vice?

Answer:
Actions and their Weight:
There is the outcome of actions and there is the recompense for the actions. According to my faith, the outcome is already preordained, while the choice to choose why and whether to choose to act or not is left to us. Eventually we end up doing whatever has already been preordained, and the program of this world proceeds as planned. Thus, the weight of the actions depends on the choices we make and the intentions and reasons behind them. Faith plays a major role in the evaluation of the choice.

Evidence (or the lack of it) for An Omniscient Being:
There is no evidence for either atheism or polytheism. The only deduction all humans can make from our daily experiences is that there is always someone who makes something, i.e. nothing comes from nothing. The other deduction that we can make from human interactions is that whenever there are more than one claimants to power, there eventually is a power struggle, with either one person dominating the rest, or whatever they were fighting over gets destroyed. Thus, logically, there can only be one God.
Of course, that leads us to the question that if there is a God who is uncreated, then why can't everything else also come into existence without a creator? There is a definite gap in our knowledge as we know nothing about God, but that is not a proof for the non-existence of God. It simply means that our knowledge is limited and inadequate.

Faith and Justice:
The greatest injustice conceivable is to deny the existence of God or to believe that there can be more than one God. The Hereafter is about Justice and Recompense.

Coming back to my previous post where I've mentioned The Trust, only those humans can be entrusted with the Gardens of Eternity who are able to prove that they qualify for the huge responsibility that comes with such an inheritance: that they have done their best to be Just towards God and His creations, including one's own self, and are kind and generous, and are doers of good deeds. Thus the need for this trial we call life on Earth. Therefore, it is deliberately a blindfolded test.
This is how I understand it. And God knows best.

Factual Accuracy of the Quran

After a discussion on whether Quran is human or divine in origin:
Okay, let’s leave aside whether this is a book about God by humans, or a book from God about humans.
Let’s discuss the factual accuracy part first. You ask “how we can study something factually, with so many authoritative arguments and divine authority getting in the way?” The authoritative arguments and divine authority are only for those who consider the Quran from God. For all others, its just book giving warnings and glad tidings about a future (hereafter) we cannot know of otherwise. It explains giving many examples and similitudes, and those explanations draw the reader’s attention to much that we can verify for factual accuracy.
For instance, the description of developmental stages of the human embryo has been verified by modern technology such as high-powered microscopes, similarly that the gender of the child is determined by the male sperm, that humans were formed first from clay (check RNA research) and then from ‘despised fluid’. As per modern science findings, and contrary to general religious perception, no where does the Quran state that Adam was the first human. Rather, it makes two statements: (a) creation of Adam and Jesus was similar: I take it to mean that both were created outside the normal human development process, without fathers: that is a matter of faith; however the other statement about humans, which is of interest to me from an evolutionary point of view, is that the Quran poses the question that wasn’t there a period of time over humans when they were unremembered / not mentioned?
If we consider verses mentioning time, it compares one measure of time with another measure of time, the concept of relativity of time has only been accepted by the scientific community for a century or so, whereas the Quran was revealed over fourteen centuries ago. It speaks of a land where the sun is rising and there is no protection from Sun: we now know the in the Antarctic spring, a continent-wide hole forms in the ozone.
Where it foretold the defeat of the Romans, it stated that they will be defeated in the lowest land: we now know that the region of the Dead Sea is the lowest point on Earth’s surface, in terms of heights measured in sea level, or as wikipedia describes: 'lowest elevation on land'
The Quran also stated that the body of the Pharaoh who drowned chasing Moses has been preserved. It was only in the last century that such a mummy was discovered about which scientists theorise that the cause of death was drowning.
The Quran claims that all creatures form communities like humans, and scientists are discovering more and more evidence for the same.
The Quran mentions many such things which can be verified for factual accuracy through honest, sincere, meticulous study and research.
Once you verify for yourself whether you find this book to be written by humans or sent by someone who really knows everything about everything, then its up to your will and choice whether to accept the theology in it. Willing and loving worship can only be possible once one is sure about their faith and beliefs. The paths may be different, some observe nature and their hearts and minds bear witness to an unseen Creator, some have experiences that just can't be explained as natural, some find scientific evidence, there are so many ways to stumble upon faith. The main purpose is to discover, appreciate and worship God, with gratitude for this gift of life, and hopes for a wonderful future.

Faith and Doubt

Excerpts of an email conversation I (SI) had with a mathematician (B)

B: I don't ask you to abandon your faith, but to doubt the literacy of its rendering.
SI: Then it would no longer be faith!

B: Jews, christians, and muslims were more open to, if not more aware of, the Platonist way to conceive/search God in their earlier periods, but eventually the mainstream continues to stick on the Aristotelian dogma, like notably, the existence of some primitively physical beings.
SI: I believe in [1] Allah, [2] His Angels, [3] His Books, [4] His Messengers, [5] The Latter Day (of destruction and re-creation), [6] Predestination (all fate, good or otherwise, is from Allah, the Most High), [7] Resurrection after Death. I believe in it just like I believe I’m alive in the present moment and that I will be dead at some future moment.

B: To progress in the fundamental, we have to progress in doubting *almost* everything. OK?
SI: I am willing to doubt reason and logic and all other constructs of human intellect including my own. I am willing to question your theory and assumptions and proofs, in an effort to arrive at the possible truth. However, I am not willing to sacrifice faith on the altar of doubt. I do not believe that science has the ability to conceive God but I’m a believer in science’ ability to reason the existence of God, without presuming the existence of God. I think your comp represents the latter approach. That is why it interests me.

B: We will never sacrifice faith. How could we? Why should we? On the contrary, faith is what really remains when you attempt the universal doubt. Of course, I distinguish faith in God, from faith in anything a human can relate to God. By experience I know it is difficult to do that by mail. I am curious to see how much you are open to science/doubt, and so how much deep is your faith. (and I test myself in passing, and everybody is invited to seized the opportunity).
SI: My faith encourages me to pursue the sciences, to use my faculties and intelligence for reason and logic, and the study of the sciences is not doubt. Doubt is the lack of faith!

B: Doubt about God, is a lack of faith. Doubt about humans and all what they say, especially on God, is an evidence of faith. All texts, all theories, all reports, all journals, all books, can and should be put in doubt, always, if you are confident enough in the search of truth.
SI: Agree in principle, differ in detail.

And about a couple of weeks later
B: I am not sure I commented on this. It might be the heart of the matter. Science is only doubt. But as Descartes saw, we cannot doubt of everything, and so, we do trust something. The more we are able to doubt, the more we can see what remains undoubtable, and faith can build on that. So, those who have the faith have no problem doubting any theories, texts, etc. The faith rises from within, and is definitely beyond words, texts, theories, equations,  etc. The universal machines are confronted to something similar when they introspect themselves (in the sense of Kleene second recursion diagonal way). In front of the absolute truth, science can only augment the doubt, but without ever needing to abandon faith. It is the faith in the ineffable which invites the doubt on *all* the fables.
An atheist/agnostic responded: So you must have faith - but not in anything in particular?

Root Belief of Islam

On an online discussion board, a neo-Pagan with a Christian past, asked about the 'root' belief of Islam, prayers, original sin.

Answer: The most fundamental, root belief of Islam is that 'there is no god but God'. We believe that there is only one God, the Creator and Sustainer of the heavens and earth and everything in between. He governs and directs all affairs, and all matters are referred to Him for decision. God is independent and self-sufficient and the creation is dependent on God for everything.

The complete first statement of faith that you referred to is: 'there is no god but God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God'.

A detailed statement of faith, known as Iman-e-Muffassal is: 'I believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, in the last day, in predestination: that all good and bad is from Allah, the Most High, and I believe in resurrection after death.'

We humans have been sent to Earth for a limited time and for a purpose. We humans are repeatedly tested in this lifetime, and every fine detail of our lives is recorded.

We have been endowed with free will so that we can choose our thoughts and actions. However, this does not mean that God is unaware of what we will choose to think or do. Human free-will and God's complete knowledge are not mutually exclusive. It is God who decides who to bless with faith, because only God knows our hearts.

Regarding prayers, we need them. If we pray, it is to our own benefit. If not, it is our own loss.

Similarly, when we choose to sin, whether it be against God or against humanity or against creation in general, we are actually being unjust to ourselves.

God is not unjust towards creation, rather God is loving, merciful and kind.

It is the duty of messengers and all those who learn from them to convey the message of God to others. Whether others choose to believe or not is between God and each individual soul. God is oft-forgiving, and loves to forgive. To quote a verse: Quran [2:186] 'And when My servants question thee concerning Me, then surely I am nigh. I answer the prayer of the suppliant when he crieth unto Me. So let them hear My call and let them trust in Me, in order that they may be led aright.' [translator: Pickthal]

There is no compulsion in religion, God does not impose faith on anyone. God knows best our hearts and our souls.

We believe we have a common history with Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus and all other messengers of God. We believe they all preached the same faith in one God, resurrection and the last day. Muhammad was the seal, the last of the series of prophets.

As opposed to the Christian concept of Jesus atoning for humanity's sin through his death, we Muslims believe that each human is responsible for his / her own self. Nobody can bear the burden of another. Each one of us will be judged and recompensed according to our own faith, beliefs and deeds. We do not believe that we are here on Earth because of Adam and Eve's sin. As I mentioned a few posts ago, the purpose of Adam's creation was a 'khalifa' of the Earth, i.e. a vice-regent or someone who is responsible for the Earth. We were predestined to come to Earth for a temporary abode. The resurrection is also predestined, and so is a permanent life thereafter.

Attitudes of Faith

The following is from a chain of posts with the subject: why atheists are so disliked
Question: I wonder if either person would be offended if I compared their faith in divine revelation which they exhibit toward their chosen scriptures, the Bible of Mr R C and the Quran of Samiya Illias. I find it easier to respect Samiya's entrenched faith, but is that because the material of the Quran is mostly unknown to me? Is it because I see all Muslims, unfairly I'm sure, as Islamic fundies? I know the Bible well and have deep-seated feelings regarding its contents; I've considered my feelings about it, the available scholarship regarding it, the internal conflicts I went through trying to make sense of it, trying to resolve its bipolar deity into a realistic image of something I can call God. I think my personal difference in attitude owes very much to my difference in understanding of the two books, and I think Samiya and R's attitudes of faith in those books is really quite similar.
I would, of course, care not only for Mr M's response but also for what Samiya and R think about attitudes of faith. I know my wife's attitude of faith in the Bible is very different from R's, more critical and with a different focus. Brother M will have yet another interesting attitude of faith, one I believe, that is deep and profound while yet being critical in a scholarly manner, but that's for him to say.
Response:I'll begin by commenting on the subject of this post: I respect atheists because I feel that they have the courage to put faith to test and the honesty to reject what they find untruthful. Having said that, I feel they are half-way in their journey towards truth. They have scrutinized, found wanting and left the belief-systems they grew up with or explored in their journey.
Neither do I not take my religion blindly, nor does the Quran require it. My faith is based upon critical evaluation of the text I consider holy.
It is after many years of questioning and exploring Islam and other religions, as well as putting them all to tests of morality, science, etc that I've come to believe that only the Arabic Quran is divine and
unadulterated. All other texts are human compilations and thus cannot be articles of faith. Since I'm convinced about the veracity of the Quran, I do not question it, but I do question my understanding of it. As I believe it to be the ultimate source of wisdom, if something seems contradictory or conflicting with what I know to be the good and stated position, I try to explore by compiling related verses from other chapters, discussing my understanding with scholars, etc.
http://islam-qna.blogspot.com/2011/01/principles-of-quranic-study.html
I know that Islam and almost all other religions are mostly misunderstood and mispracticed by many. Yet, I believe that almost all religions emanate from the same source, have been coloured by human modifications, and contain some gems of the original message. Hence, we all have certain bits of the puzzle, and we all stand to benefit by sharing our perceptions and understanding of them.

Actions speak louder than words

To my reply to Punishment for Adultery according to Quran, some one commented: "We dont need to listen to what moslems are saying because what they are doing speaks louder."
Answer: The only thing sure about life is that we'll meet death someday_ can we afford the luxury of just writing off religion on the basis of what others are doing or saying??
We all have 24 hours each day and we can either spend it criticizing others, and dismissing them, or use the time seeking knowledge and going to the source of all scriptures to discover the truth for ourselves.
I'm a born muslim, and I grew up in a society with many plusses and minusses. Religion and culture, poverty and charity, pride and humility, fanaticism and liberalism, and many other contradictory practices. I am glad that I was introduced to the Quran early on and could see that many practices were rooted more in culture than in religion, and somehow, the two were so inter-twined that many people were unaware of what was what, and social expediency also adding a further twist to it.
Another thing that bothered me was that I knew very little about other religions. Hence I started exploring what other religions were really all about. I'm glad that I discovered Study Circle and grateful to all those who shared their perspective of their religion and helped me think from different angles and understand better.
Reading the original texts of different religions has led me to believe that all stem from the same source, all have gems of wisdom, and all have been used as tools by certain people to oppress and exploit others. Thus, I do not base my beliefs on the practices of others. My beliefs are based upon what I honestly and sincerely consider to be the truth, based upon whatever little research that I'm able to do, and I pray that I be guided to truth. Amen.

Will Christians go to heaven with Muslims?

Question: Will Christians go to heaven with Muslims?
Answer: As far as I understand the Holy Quran, all true believers will go to Heaven, inshAllah, while all who know in their hearts the truth, yet reject, will go to Hell. The rest to whom it is not clear, and they are still searching, sifting religions and seeking the truth, I don't know. But Allah knows what is in the hearts, and He is the best judge. He gives life and food and clothing and the comforts of this world in varying amounts to all, but guidance is given only to those who seek. We humans have been endowed with free-will, and Allah wants us to acknowledge and worship Him without any compulsion. That is why, guidance is for only those who seek it. Allah sent many prophets throughout the ages to inform, guide, give glad tidings and warn humanity. The source and the message was always the same. In the Quran, Allah speaks very highly of some Jews and Christians, informing us of how pious they are. Yet, the Quran is also replete with examples of how people throughout the ages have rejected the message, how the message has been changed/modified/corrupted, and what are the pitfalls that one must be careful of.
Daily, in our prayers, we recite the opening passage of the Quran (Surah Fateha) in which we pray for guidance and to be protected from following the path of those earn the wrath of God or who go astray.
http://www.searchtruth.com/chapter_display_all.php?chapter=1
Being labelled a muslim/ christian/ jew/ hindu or anything else, or being born in a certain religion doesn't really seem to make any difference. The basic test is of the individual heart and soul. Those who truly believe, actively seek guidance, and try to live their life according to the guidance, in piety, ever aware of the presence of God, and the surety of returning to Him, of the Judgement and the Hereafter, will go to Heaven as that is the promise of God.
Holy Quran 5:119 Allah saith: This is a day in which their truthfulness profiteth the truthful, for theirs are Gardens underneath which rivers flow, wherein they are secure for ever, Allah taking pleasure in them and they in Him. That is the great triumph.

God: unexplainable?

[Quote] i do not think anyone can really "explain", in any intellectual fashion, the "unexplainable" and whatever "god is" strikes me as something outside the dimensions of reality we can understand or really even grasp........some have developed neat constructs that satisfy them and sound good....[EndQuote]
Answer: We muslims believe the same thing: that God is unexplainable, He is nothing that we can begin to imagine or grasp or explain, that He is not like anything. Chapter 112 titled Al-Ikhlas [Absoluteness] reads: Say: He is Allah, the One! Allah, the eternally Besought of all! He begetteth not nor was begotten. And there is none comparable unto Him. [translation by Pickthal]

[Quote] then too, i must be honest with myself, in terms of my motivations for the sorts of work i have done for so long...........i have to question why i chose to do this, for no one made me, and i had no "vision" at some point which said "go and help"........... [EndQuote]
Answer: God has gifted all of us with a conscience, a guide to what is good and what is bad, what is right and what is wrong, and the free-will to choose our actions. The blessed ones among us choose to hear their conscience and choose to do the right thing.

[Quote] then, i read about Mother Teresa and the great emptiness she walked in for decades, feeling abandoned by the One who she felt "sent her to the poor"............perhaps she was just deluded and perhaps i have been also............i will have to give up.........i cannot do it anymore................i too have become empty inside.............it will kill me to continue..........i do not want R&R........i am getting out and making plans to do so.............it is as if there is no oxygen left in the air....... [EndQuote]
Answer: Even the Prophets and mystics have felt like that…….. God chooses when and who, but that is a very rare experience of a very few……….. He wants us to observe all around us and to know that there is somebody who has caused this, and is sustaining this, and wants us to believe inspite of no direct experience of the divine………. That is the test! If God were to reveal Himself to all of us, who then would not believe?? Why we’re being put through this test, I’m sure He knows…………. Though we can get an idea of it by exploring the different holy books, and figuring out what He has to say about it.

[Quote] i realize i am "seared" in heart and mind............i know i have bitterness............how could i not know it? as far as i can tell, all that is left is for my prayer to be granted..........to be filled with "awe and wonder"...........to "see" beyond what i can see...........this must be some form of "experiential" happening..............but, i cannot "demand" it, since i have no idea on whom i would make the demand..............:)))) [EndQuote]
Answer: Pray to “To whoever is the Creator and Sustainer of ALL” …………. You know how those letters begin: To whom it may concern. I pray that He will show you His way, and He will bless you. Being a muslim, I can’t resist the urge to ask you to atleast do a critical but unbiased reading of the Holy Quran, while waiting for your prayers to be answered.

[Quote] it is no longer possible for me to identify with any "faith"............too late for that................my only answer is to "walk away from it all" and focus on simple things like growing bananas, limes, tropical flowers and fishing off the coast at savanna la mar, jamaica.............. [EndQuote]
Answer: It is never too late……… don’t identify with faith….. just have faith….. that the Beneficent Being who created us loves us and that all that we see is not pointless or mere play, but that there are reasons beyond our knowledge………….. had He not loved us He could and would have made all of those who did not believe in Him or His religion suffer; but that is not what we see………. Rich and poor, healthy and sick, happy and sad, famished and well-fed, all shades of lives are being led by people of all faith……….. all get air to breathe, all get sustenance while alive, all get Earth below and sky above, all get to smell flowers, enjoy colours, see the same stars…………… yes, one would want to alleviate the sufferings of all who suffer, and one must try, but all have been given their own exam sheets, their own strengths and weaknesses, and their own capacity to bear the difficulties and forbearance, we just cannot judge of what we know and understand so little…………. What have the rich, healthy and successful people done to earn that state in which they’re in? Is it their birth-right? No, ofcourse not. We all have our lives to live, to touch others lives with our words and actions, and constantly strive for the better………. And our God-gifted conscience guides us and helps us know what’s right. Have faith, know that He exists, and pray in your heart that He shows you His way!

Holy Quran.... the Word of God

Question: The very obvious stupidity contained in every belief system is the result of accepting as true the statements of others without checking against personal experience. This is made even worse by the mental laziness that people use in order to take short cuts. All the different classes of belief do the same thing and consequently the world is in a mess caused by lazy, expediency focused thinking.

Answer: Very true about most denizens of planet Earth. The very first, most important thing to do is to observe with all our senses, and use our intellect to determine whether or not this Universe / Multiverse came about itself, or if there is an/are multiple intelligent designs behind it. If there is/are, then what is more plausible: one intelligent creator or multiple creators?? If authority can reside with only One person, then who is this person and how do we find this Creator/ how do we revere and worship/ and is that the purpose of our creation/ what is life, and is there or not a life beyond this Earth/ and if so, will there be a reckoning??? Is there a message that this God has sent, how do we know which is the true message when there are so many multiple faith systems, so many religions, so many claims????? My personal method is to evaluate all Holy Books for accuracy/ truth/ consistency/ evaluation of scientific data/mathematical data/ moral code/ fairness and justice, and only one Book has met all of these parameters.. The Holy Quran... so, I believe that it is theWord of God. Since God himself says in the Holy Quran that He is Allah, that Muhammad is His messenger, and that the Quran is a Book without doubt; a Guidance for the Muttaqeen (those who are aware of Allah all the time; love him for his Love for us, and fear him as He is the only one to be feared; and as the Day of Reckoning will definitely come). May the true God guide us. Amen.
